How long before mold grows after water damage

Mold grows after water damage when materials stay wet past about 48 hours, and EPA says drying inside 24 to 48 hours prevents it in most cases1.

Section 1.0The window, according to the agencies

EPA says to dry water damaged areas and items within 24 to 48 hours to prevent mold2. CDC says the same for a flooded home, clean and dry fully and quickly, within 24 to 48 hours3. Past 48 hours, EPA's guide treats wet building materials as a mold question and sends you to its remediation table4.

Section 2.0Hours 0 to 2

  • Stop the source and confirm it with the meter flow triangle5.
  • Move furniture off wet carpet and lift drapes.
  • Photograph everything before it moves.

Section 3.0Hours 2 to 24

Get water out and air moving. EPA's clean water steps include drying carpet and backing within the 24 to 48 hour window6. Open cabinet doors, pull toe kicks if water went under them, and run dehumidifiers with doors closed. Aim for indoor humidity under 60 percent, ideally 30 to 507.

Section 4.0Hours 24 to 48

Check the hidden spots. The back of drywall, insulation, cabinet floors and carpet pad dry slowest. If a spot is still wet at the end of the second day, plan to remove it.

Section 5.0After 48 hours

Assume mold has started on porous materials and plan for remediation. EPA says porous items like ceiling tiles and carpet may have to be thrown away if they get moldy8.

Section 6.0When the water was dirty

Sewage, toilet overflow with waste, and floodwater from outside follow different rules. EPA says that damage needs a professional with experience in contaminated water9.

Q and AQuestions people ask

Q01Can mold grow in 24 hours?

EPA's window is 24 to 48 hours2. Drying in the first day is the safest plan.

Q02Will mold grow if drywall dries in two days?

In most cases no, says EPA, if dried within 24 to 48 hours1.

Q03How do I know if it is dry?

Compare moisture readings with a dry wall of the same material in the same house.

Q04Do fans alone dry a wall cavity?

Rarely. The back face of drywall needs airflow or an opening.

Q05Is wet carpet a lost cause?

Clean water carpet dried in the window often survives6.

Q06What if I find mold a week later?

Fix the water and remove the growth. EPA says it will come back otherwise10.
