Guide 05Field guide

Can I remove mold myself?

You can remove mold yourself when the patch is under about 10 square feet and you know why it grew, says EPA1.

Section 1.0Measure first

Ten square feet is roughly a 3 foot by 3 foot patch1. Add up every spot in the room. Over 10, EPA points to its larger job guidance2, with limited containment from 10 to 100 square feet3.

Section 2.0Gear list

  • N95 respirator, at a minimum4.
  • Goggles with no vent holes5.
  • Long gloves. Rubber, neoprene, nitrile, polyurethane or PVC if you use bleach or strong cleaners6.
  • Rubber boots and old clothes7.

Section 3.0Scrub, then dry

On hard surfaces, scrub with detergent and water and dry completely8. CDC says household products, soap and water, or a bleach solution can remove mold from hard surfaces9. If you use bleach, CDC's cleaning guide says 1 cup of household bleach in 1 gallon of water10, never mixed with ammonia or other cleaners11.

Section 4.0Throw away, do not save

Porous items like ceiling tiles and carpet may have to go12, because mold grows into their gaps13. Bag moldy pieces in the room before you carry them out.

Section 5.0When to stop

  • The patch is larger than you thought once the wall is open.
  • The water was sewage or floodwater14.
  • You suspect mold in the AC system15.
  • Anyone in the home has asthma, allergies or a weak immune system16.

Section 6.0Fix the cause

EPA says if you clean up mold but do not fix the water, it will most likely come back17. If you are not sure what the cause is, call or text (702) 728-4493.

Q and AQuestions people ask

Q01What kills mold permanently?

Fixing the moisture. Spores will not grow without it18.

Q02Is vinegar or bleach better?

EPA says detergent and water works on hard surfaces8 and does not recommend bleach as routine19.

Q03Do I need a respirator for a small patch?

EPA says an N95 for small areas20.

Q04Can I paint over it after cleaning?

Only after it is removed and dry. Paint over mold is likely to peel21.

Q05How do I know I am done?

Water fixed, visible mold gone and no moldy odor, says EPA22.

Q06Should I hire someone for more than 10 square feet?

EPA says if you hire a contractor, make sure they have mold experience and check references23.
